Three members of the Advocate, the official student
publication of Far Eastern University (FEU) garnered three out
of five awards among other schools nationwide.
Dwight Norman Sarga, third year Mass Communication
student was hailed champion in the News writing competition.
Mikael Andrei Ladiao, second year Mass Communication student was
awarded 6th place
in Sports writing while Rodolfo Torres II, third year Fine Arts
student earned 3rd place
in Photojournalism. Jane Camille Almasin and Wilson Yu, both in
third year, Mass Communication and Fine Arts students
respectively, also represented the organization.
The 2-day seminar and writing competition held at
the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), Tagaytay City
last January 17 to 19 was divided into five categories: News
writing, Editorial writing, Sports writing, Photojournalism and
Page Design/Layout.
Various professors and practitioners of journalism
served as lecturers and judges of the seminar and competition:
Prof. Yvonne Chua from College of Mass Communication, UP Diliman
for News writing and Mr. Melvin Gascon from Philippine Daily
Inquirer Northern Luzon for Photojournalism among others.
The Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc.
(OSSEI) organized the event. OSSEI, a group committed to
provide avenues for skills development of students aims to
enhance personhood of students and to prepare them for
responsible leadership.
Different schools nationwide participated in the
competition: Basilan State University, De La Salle-Lipa,
UPHSD-Calamba, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Eastern Visayas
State University (EVSU), and Mindanao Polytechnic State College
among others.
Another stroke
Michael Glenn Echavez, third year Fine Arts student
was also awarded third place in Editorial cartooning in a
separate seminar and competition called “Pressplay” formed by
Ateneo de Manila University’s The Guidon and De La Salle
University’s The LaSallian, both official student publications
of the said universities, at the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU)
last January 19.
Pressplay, an advance Journalism workshop, catered
to hone the skills of campus journalists from four categories:
In-Depth Writing and Reporting, Photojournalism, Editing,
Layouting and Cartooning.
Various media practitioners talked for the workshop:
Carlos Conde, correspondent in the Philippines of the New York
Times for In-Depth Writing and reporting and Rowena
Carranza-Paraan, current Secretary General of the National Union
of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) for Editing, among
others.
