FEU celebrates jazz fest

MARCH 12, 2008

Filling the boundaries of the University with American-made music, Far Eastern University (FEU) and the President’s Committee on Culture (PCC) hosted the premiere of the Philippine International Jazz and Arts Festival at FEU Quadrangle last February 29.

The said international organization, founded by the Father of Philippine Jazz Piano – Emil Mijares, envisions to promote Jazz and Arts all throughout the world.

It was for the first time that six organizations from different countries: Blue Note Tokyo Jazz Festival (Japan), Java Jazz Festival (Indonesia), Singapore Mosaic Music Festival (Singapore), Kula Lumpur Sunburst International Festival (Malaysia), and the Philippine International Jazz and Arts Festival (Philippines) have come together to organize a month-long Asian Music Festival Tour.

The Philippine International Jazz Fest 2008 conducted its concerts from February 29 to March 16 in various institutions like Rockwell Tent, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines College of Music, Glorietta 3 Park, Trinoma and Bonifacio High Street but had its prime at the University.

“The goal of this concert is not just to promote Jazz awareness but as well as to expose the FEU community to the performing arts. It is also a very distinctive feeling that we are given the privilege to host the very first day of the event,” says Mr. Martin Lopez, PCC head. Moreover, he said that this festival is fashioned for a cause; beneficiary of which is the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Bob Aves Group’s Kulintang music fused in jazz sounds to open the show. Other performances included in the program were The Brass Munkeys, Bembol Rockers, foreign artist David Starck from France and home-grown talents FEU Drum and Bugle Corps.

The FEU Jazz Fest entitled “Lecture Performance” was viewed by almost 900 people both from within the institutions and outsiders. In-house staff and personnel: Board of Trustees, Office of the Student Affairs and Community Services, Theatre Guild, Dance Troupe, as well as outside groups: ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network and other electrical service companies collaborated to conduct the event.
