Two Far Eastern University (FEU) students proved
themselves as promising future leaders nationwide as they gained
three awards in the 11th Civitas
Asia Student Conference Series at the University of Asia and the
Pacific (UA&P) last January 31 – February 2.
Being the delegate with the best and most number of
ideas contributed to the group, Carlo Benedict Sarmiento, PRO of
English Language Circle garnered the Most Radical Dreamer Award
and Creme de la Creme award among 34 students in his group.
Ariel Almarte, PRO External of College “Y” Club also
won the Most Radical Dreamer Award.
Endorsed by their respective institute offices,
other delegates were Thermina Ann Akram, James Edward Ang, Ramon
Victor Roxas and Juan Cary Suitas.
“FEU participates in such events because of the
University’s strong faith on the capability of the students.
They only need exposure, linkages and opportunities and in the
end, they excel,” said Dr. Adelaida Fronda, Dean of the Office
of Student Affairs and Community Services.
Civitas Asia is an annual event organized by UA&P
since 1997. It focuses on asserting the role of academe in
Asia-Pacific Development and nurtures the qualities of its
participants who can serve as future leaders. Moreover, Civitas
Asia establishes cooperation within the Asia-Pacific community
through collaboration and communication.
This year’s theme “Youth Volunteerism: Key to
Personal Development and Social Construction” was expressed in
three workshops that focused on the youth being formed in social
consciousness, being educated in volunteerism and as an
instrument in socio-economic change.
Dino
Badilla from the National Youth Commission, Mikey
Cojuangco-Jaworski and Senator Richard Gordon served as speakers
of the conference.
Participants were divided into three groups. Each
participant served as a representative delegate for their
respective college or university.
Participating schools include Bataan Peninsula State
University, Central Colleges of the Philippines, De La
Salle-College of St. Benilde, De La Salle University-Lipa, De La
Salle University-Manila, Far Eastern University, Miriam College,
New Era University, Philippine Normal University, Philippine
Women’s University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines,
St. Paul University-Iloilo, St. Scholastica’s College,
Southwestern University-Cebu, University of Asia and the
Pacific, University of Cordillera, University of the
Philippines-Diliman, University of the Philippines-Visayas and
University of Santo Tomas.
FEU
organizes similar activities which emphasize on leadership and
youth development. These include the Pathways to Leadership and
the University Belt Student Consortium.
