Student leaders gain awards in national conference

Two Far Eastern University (FEU) students proved themselves as promising future leaders nationwide as they gained three awards in the 11th Civitas Asia Student Conference Series at the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) last January 31 – February 2.

Being the delegate with the best and most number of ideas contributed to the group, Carlo Benedict Sarmiento, PRO of English Language Circle garnered the Most Radical Dreamer Award and Creme de la Creme award among 34 students in his group.

Ariel Almarte, PRO External of College “Y” Club also won the Most Radical Dreamer Award.

Endorsed by their respective institute offices, other delegates were Thermina Ann Akram, James Edward Ang, Ramon Victor Roxas and Juan Cary Suitas.

“FEU participates in such events because of the University’s strong faith on the capability of the students. They only need exposure, linkages and opportunities and in the end, they excel,” said Dr. Adelaida Fronda, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs and Community Services.

Civitas Asia is an annual event organized by UA&P since 1997. It focuses on asserting the role of academe in Asia-Pacific Development and nurtures the qualities of its participants who can serve as future leaders. Moreover, Civitas Asia establishes cooperation within the Asia-Pacific community through collaboration and communication.

This year’s theme “Youth Volunteerism: Key to Personal Development and Social Construction” was expressed in three workshops that focused on the youth being formed in social consciousness, being educated in volunteerism and as an instrument in socio-economic change.

Dino Badilla from the National Youth Commission, Mikey Cojuangco-Jaworski and Senator Richard Gordon served as speakers of the conference.

Participants were divided into three groups. Each participant served as a representative delegate for their respective college or university.

Participating schools include Bataan Peninsula State University, Central Colleges of the Philippines, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, De La Salle University-Lipa, De La Salle University-Manila, Far Eastern University, Miriam College, New Era University, Philippine Normal University, Philippine Women’s University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, St. Paul University-Iloilo, St. Scholastica’s College, Southwestern University-Cebu, University of Asia and the   Pacific, University of Cordillera, University of the Philippines-Diliman, University of the Philippines-Visayas and University of Santo Tomas.
