‘Emo?’ Poetry is not included in such.

I could not think of reasons why most people think of poetry as something like so sad, so tragic and as what people say, ‘emo’. We have always been taught about Literature and perhaps you already had your Literature subjects such as Philippine & World Literature. Did your Literature professor ever said that poetry is only for tragedy and loneliness? I guess not.

Poetry is something of art. It is a form of writing a story in a unique creative way. It can be of different theme like love, death, success, nature, family, music, happiness and many more. A poem always means a thing. It has always something to say and something to remind us.

It is a fruit of ones soul’s solitude and contemplation. It is a product of a great imagination and it brings thoughts before the minds of every individual. Poetry represents something that affects an individual.

Diction is one of the elements of poetry wherein the choice of words lies on a writer’s hands. Often, the diction adds up to the ingenuity of a piece. And usually, a literary writer would use words that are more appealing to the readers’ emotions. But the sad thing is most readers would relate those words to something that it is not.

Frankly, it is not nice to hear people saying that someone who writes a poem is an ‘emo’. Well, maybe because I also write poems but let us not forget the fine point behind every written poem.

It is very disappointing that people do not know how to appreciate poems. Knowing that every written word is exactly the same as every emotion felt, we should learn that a poem is a work of art and it is worth a meaning. It is an artwork wherein emotions, passion, desires and creativity are drawn in words.

Let us not limit ourselves in a much unembellished word. Let us try to get something very meaningful out of a simple written piece. Just like what I have said, every poem has its own message, try to look beyond and see the magic in black and white.

The power of words in poetry is more than of a living. Continuously, its significance will hide but will always be of great importance. A poet does not write to express alone but to give out his very intelligent opinion and beliefs. Why label them as ‘emo’ when in fact they are just sharing their viewpoint?
